SHEIN's overseas market share continues to increase, and the small order fast response model breaks through the problem of fashion inventory

The 2024 fashion retailer ranking was recently released, ushering in a new landscape for global apparel retail. SHEIN secured the third spot globally, trailing only Nike and Adidas. When considering the entire spectrum of global fashion brands, SHEIN outperforms ZARA, H&M, and UNIQLO, currently holding the highest ranking. Additionally, the top ten includes brands such as LV, Skechers, Puma, and New Balance. It's evident that among the top ten fashion retailers worldwide, SHEIN stands as the sole Chinese brand. This remarkable achievement is a testament to its innovative strategy and precise planning.


For a long time, the top ten global fashion brands have been almost monopolized by European and American brands. These brands have first-mover advantages, with three to five decades of development and accumulation, and have already established a solid competitive defense line in multiple dimensions such as brand building, supply chain construction, and sustainable development. However, SHEIN has been able to gain a foothold in overseas markets and achieve leapfrog development, which is inseparable from its innovative and continuously upgraded leading digital on-demand flexible supply chain, as well as technological innovation and sustainable development layouts covering the entire production process.

From a regional perspective, the digital upgrade of China's supply chain, with SHEIN as a leading wave, is giving birth to globally competitive brands. From the perspective of industry competition, amidst global economic fluctuations and subtle shifts in consumer behavior, digital supply chain innovation and sustainable development have become essential elements for fashion retail enterprises.

Specifically focusing on market share, according to GlobalData, Nike, as the largest fashion retailer, saw its share decrease instead of increase, from 3% in 2023 to 2.85%, a drop of 0.15 percentage points. Among the other three brands, Zara and Uniqlo increased by 0.05 and 0.04 percentage points respectively, while H&M decreased by 0.01 percentage point. In 2024, SHEIN's market share reached 1.53%, an increase of 0.24 percentage points compared to 2023, making it the biggest winner in the fashion market last year along with Hermes and Chanel. It should be noted that even Adidas, which had the largest increase in market share among the top ten, only saw a 0.17 percentage point increase from the previous year.



SHEIN's sustained growth and its ability to win the favor of consumers alongside top luxury brands undoubtedly hinge on its brand power. Once, if you randomly stopped a foreigner on the street abroad and asked them about Chinese brands they knew, the answers would mostly be consumer electronics brands such as Huawei, Xiaomi, and DJI. Nowadays, SHEIN may appear even more frequently. If you pay attention to some short videos of street interviews posted by foreign bloggers, you will find that this is indeed the case.

In the context of Chinese enterprises venturing overseas becoming a topic of the times, among the insights provided by China's Top 50 Global Brands, the top three brands that have won the favor of international consumers through innovation and localization strategies are ByteDance, Xiaomi, and SHEIN. SHEIN provides young consumers with cost-effective products, which in itself represents a unique value recreation. Based on its rapid creation, precise capture, and leadership in fashion and trends, SHEIN not only meets users' functional and emotional needs but also firmly establishes its product and brand power.

Both the advantage in price and the rapid response capability to market trends rely on the breakthrough brought by the 'small order, fast response' flexible supply chain. In the fashion industry, high inventory has always been a thorny problem that plagues many companies. The inventory levels of many companies generally hover between 30% and 40%, while SHEIN has reduced its inventory rate to single digits by relying on its advanced flexible supply chain system, greatly compressing costs and creating ample room for lowering product sales prices.

The construction of SHEIN's flexible supply chain system is continually undergoing iterative process improvements and process optimizations. In 2023, SHEIN established its first apparel manufacturing innovation research center in Guangdong, continuously outputting flexible supply chain standards and exploring cutting-edge technologies in apparel manufacturing. At the center, there are auxiliary tools that replace manual sewing of diamond chains, machines that can automatically perform cutting, and equipment templates that can sew a pair of gloves in just a few seconds. Due to the implementation of a series of supply chain improvement measures, SHEIN's return rate due to quality issues was extremely low last year, making delivery quality more standardized.



SHEIN's supply chain barriers have been established through continuous investment over the past decade or even several decades. By utilizing actual market demand to predict sales and control production, it has effectively reduced overproduction and significantly reduced the waste of industrial resources. Today, SHEIN stands alongside top luxury brands and has won widespread favor among consumers. In the future, with the continuous iteration and upgrading of its supply chain system, SHEIN will continue to lead the fashion trend and bring more surprises and value to global consumers.
